Why is physical activity or exercise important in the management of depression?
Many people seek the advice of their GP and may be referred to a psychologist to treat their low mood. However, the current literature suggests the use of exercise as it provides consistent and effective treatment whilst being low cost. It is our goal to get you into self management so you can take charge and feel accomplished whilst achieving your goals. Talk therapy with a psychologist may be a great option for some people, and we will suggest this in certain situations, but exercise therapy is the current gold standard to treat depression long term.

Depression treatment FAQs
What type of exercise can help my depression?
Based on the most recent research, moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise has been shown to have the most beneficial and repeatable outcomes for individuals living with depression. It is also important to remember that it is our role to discover the exercises that work best for each person, and to find exercises that you enjoy. By doing this, you are more likely to create a habit that you are able to stick to.
How frequently should I exercise?
In general terms, 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise provides individuals with great overall health benefits. We advise to exercise every day if possible to assist with low mood. If unable to do so, we advise to have no more than one day between exercise sessions where possible.
Can I do anything else to help my depression?
At EP360, we believe in multidisciplinary professional help. As EP’s, we can help affect your central nervous system directly with cardiovascular exercise, strength training and goal achievement. However, it also may be highly important to delve into talk therapy with a psychologist to discover something that may be deep and underlying. We will always suggest other services that may help you, and understand where our professional assistance ceases.
Once I feel better, can I stop exercising?
Though you may have achieved your goal of improved mood, it is highly possible that you may return to your previous low mood if you stop your exercise habits. This is why it is so important for us to provide you with self management techniques and education garnered towards you and your goals. Simply put, it is important for everyone, at any age, living with any condition, to perform some form of structured exercise throughout their life. It becomes more important as we mature in life.
Why am I depressed?
There are many factors that can influence our mood, you may have a singular factor, or a combination of these factors. Feeling low from time to time is normal, and the prolonged nature of low mood is what could be described as depression. If not understood, it is important to discover what the cause may be through your GP. At EP360, we believe in multidisciplinary professional help. As EP’s, we can help affect your central nervous system with cardiovascular exercise, strength training and goal achievement, but it also may be highly important to delve into talk therapy with a psychologist to discover something that may be deep and underlying.
